Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site preserves a reconstructed 19th-century adobe trading post that stood on the Santa Fe Trail in what is now southeastern Colorado. The original fort was a key commercial and diplomatic center on the plains during the 1830s and 1840s.

The site presents the fort as an active trade and travel hub with furnished rooms, a central courtyard and interpreters demonstrating blacksmithing, baking and trade transactions. Exhibits and programs focus on trade between Anglo-American merchants, Mexican traders and Plains Indigenous peoples, and on the fort’s role in westward migration and regional diplomacy.

The original fort was established in 1833 by William and Charles Bent in partnership with Ceran St. Vrain; it operated as a trading post through the mid 19th century. The National Park Service reconstructed the fort on its original footprint and interprets the site using archaeological evidence and historical documents.

The historic site is located on the Arkansas River near the town of La Junta in southeastern Colorado, along the corridor of the historic Santa Fe Trail.
