How to Get to Bensafrim#

Bensafrim is easiest reached via Faro Airport (FAO) or by rail/bus through nearby Lagos on the Algarve Line. Regular regional trains and intercity buses link Faro and Lisbon with Lagos; from Lagos a short taxi or local bus will get you to Bensafrim.

By Air

Faro Airport (FAO): Faro is the nearest international airport for Bensafrim. From Faro you can take the CP regional train from Faro station to Lagos (the closest main rail town) - journey time to Lagos ~1h15-1h30 and fares typically €4-€8. There are also EVA/ALG bus services from Faro airport/terminal to Lagos taking about 1h15-1h40 with fares around €6-€10. A taxi or private transfer from Faro airport to Bensafrim/Lagos is faster (about 45-60 minutes) but costs roughly €70-€100.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS): Lisbon is the main alternative for long-haul flights. From Lisbon Oriente you can take Alfa Pendular/Intercidades trains toward Faro and change at Tunes or Faro for the Algarve Line to Lagos; total rail travel to the Lagos area is usually 3-3.5 hours and fares vary widely (€20-€45 depending on train class). Direct long‑distance coaches (Rede Expressos) connect Lisbon to Lagos in about 3.5-4 hours for roughly €20-€30.

By Train & Bus

Train: The Algarve Line (Linha do Algarve) serves Faro, Lagos and intermediate stations (Faro - Tunes - Lagos). The nearest main station for Bensafrim is Lagos station (established services), with regional trains from Faro taking ~1h15-1h30; expect fares in the low single digits to low teens of euros depending on service and concessions (typically €4-€10).

Bus: Intercity and regional buses (EVA Transportes and Rede Expressos) run frequent services along the Algarve coast and connect Faro, Portimão, Lagos and Silves. Buses stop at Lagos bus terminal; journeys from Faro to Lagos take ~1h15-1h40 and cost about €6-€12. Local municipal or on‑demand buses/taxis cover short hops to villages like Bensafrim.

How to Get Around Bensafrim#

The easiest way to get around Bensafrim and the surrounding Algarve is by car - it gives flexibility for beaches and inland villages. For point-to-point travel between larger towns use regional trains (Linha do Algarve) or intercity buses; taxis cover last-mile connections.

  • Car / Rental (€25-€60/day) - Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the western Algarve and reach small villages around Bensafrim. Roads are well signposted, parking is usually available in town centres, and a car lets you visit beaches and inland sights on your own schedule. Book in advance in high season to get better rates.
  • Taxi / Private transfer (€10-€100 (short to airport transfers)) - Taxis and private transfers are common for airport-to-town trips or short hops between villages. Expect fixed fares from Faro airport to the Lagos/Bensafrim area and book private transfers in advance for early/late flights. Taxis are handy if you have luggage or a late arrival.
  • Train (Linha do Algarve) (€4-€10) - Regional CP trains along the Algarve Line connect Faro, Tunes and Lagos. Trains are reliable for longer hops (Faro↔Lagos) and are usually cheaper than private transfer; check CP (Comboios de Portugal) schedules for seasonal changes. Trains don’t stop at every small village, so you may need a taxi for the final kilometre.
  • Bus (EVA / Rede Expressos) (€6-€30) - EVA and Rede Expressos run regular services linking the Algarve towns and Lisbon. Buses can be slightly slower than trains depending on stops, but they drop you at main bus terminals and are a good value choice for intercity travel. Timetables vary seasonally.
  • Bicycle (€10-€25/day) - Cycling is pleasant around parts of the Algarve outside the busiest roads - useful for short sightseeing trips in fair weather. Some roads are hilly; use quieter secondary roads and avoid cycling long distances in high summer heat. Bike rental is available in larger towns.
