Ben Cruachan is a mountain in Argyll, Scotland, rising to 1,126 metres and classified as a Munro. Part of the Cruachan massif, it dominates the area above Loch Awe.

The mountain is known for hillwalking routes to its summit and for the large pumped-storage hydroelectric complex carved into the mountain interior. The summit provides wide views across Loch Awe and the surrounding Highlands; routes climb steeply from several directions and include rocky sections.

The underground power station and associated dam were constructed in the 20th century by the regional hydro-electric authority; the facility and visitor centre make the site unusual among Scottish mountains. The mountain itself is a natural granite/quartzite massif shaped by glaciation.

Ben Cruachan stands above the northern shore of Loch Awe in Argyll, close to the villages of Dalmally and Taynuilt and within driving distance of central-west Scotland. The mountain forms a prominent landmark in the local landscape.

  • Visitor access: There is a visitor centre that explains the pumped-storage workings and offers guided tours into the mountain interior at scheduled times.
  • Summit and terrain: The summit sits at 1,126 metres and the main routes are steep with some exposed sections, so proper hillwalking gear and navigation are recommended.

What to See #

  • Cruachan Power Station: A pumped-storage hydroelectric power station built inside tunnels and caverns within the mountain, with a visitor centre and guided tours to parts of the underground turbine hall.
  • Loch Awe: A long freshwater loch that lies to the south of the mountain and forms the most obvious lowland reference point for routes and views.
