The Belogradchik Rocks are a striking set of sandstone and conglomerate rock formations near the town of Belogradchik in Vidin Province, northwestern Bulgaria, noted for their dramatic shapes and cliffs.
The fortress at Belogradchik has origins in ancient and medieval defensive works that were adapted and expanded through Roman, medieval and Ottoman periods; the rocks themselves are the product of long-term erosion. Over time the site became a regional stronghold and later a tourist attraction.
The rocks and fortress sit adjacent to the small town of Belogradchik in northwestern Bulgaria, in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, northwest of the capital Sofia.
- Best viewpoints: The fortress offers the best panoramic vantage points for photographing the rock shapes and the surrounding valley, especially in late afternoon light.
- Scale: The rock group extends along the foothills and includes dozens of named formations and cliffs created by long-term erosion of sandstone and conglomerate.

How to Get to Belogradchik Rocks #
The Belogradchik Rocks are adjacent to the town of Belogradchik in Vidin Province and are reached principally by road. Drive or take regional bus services to Belogradchik town; the main viewpoints and the fortress are a short walk from the town centre. Roads in the area connect Belogradchik with other towns in Vidin Province.
Tips for Visiting Belogradchik Rocks #
- Arrive early or late in the day to avoid the tourist buses and to get the best side-light for photographing the sculptural sandstone formations.
- Drive or take the short road up to Belogradchik Fortress (Kaleto) to save the steepest climb; once at the fortress, continue on the marked paths beyond the walls to see less-visited viewpoints of the rock formations.
- Combine the fortress visit with a walk around the base of the rocks-many visitors stay only at the fortress itself and miss the quieter trails that reveal different shapes and perspectives.
