Belogradchik Fortress (Kaleto) is a historic stronghold built into a series of dramatic red sandstone rock formations near the town of Belogradchik in Vidin Province, northwestern Bulgaria. The fortress is integrated with the natural towers and cliffs that characterise the local landscape.
The complex comprises walls, towers and chambers constructed and modified in multiple periods; Roman foundations and later medieval and Ottoman works are visible. The broad array of rock formations around the fortress include named shapes and cliffs reaching roughly up to 200 metres in places, creating a striking natural backdrop and defensive advantage.
The fortress served military and defensive functions across antiquity and the Ottoman era, and it was restored and adapted during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today the site offers walkways and viewpoints that overlook the Balkan foothills and the surrounding plain.
Belogradchik Fortress sits immediately above the town of Belogradchik in Vidin Province, in northwestern Bulgaria, and is accessible by road from the regional centres.

How to Get to Belogradchik Fortress #
Belogradchik is about 170 km northwest of Sofia. By car it is reachable via the E79; regular buses run from the regional hub of Vidin and from Montana. The town center and fortress are a short walk from local bus stops.
