Becan

Becan is a Maya archaeological site in the Mexican state of Campeche notable for a defensive earth-and-stone moat that encloses its central civic-ceremonial core. It contains plazas, stepped pyramids, and masonry architecture that date principally to the Classic period of Maya occupation.

The most distinctive feature is the surrounding ditch and ramparts which give the site an appearance of a fortified town. Excavations and restoration have exposed ballcourts, stelae, and several major temple-pyramid complexes.

Archaeological work indicates occupation and monument construction concentrated in the Classic era, with construction phases identified through ceramic and architectural sequences. Today the site is an archaeological zone open to visitors and managed as part of regional heritage programs.

Becan lies inland in Campeche, within the Maya Lowlands, and is accessed via regional roads from nearby towns and Campeche city.
