Beaufort Castle (Qala’at al-Shaqif) is a medieval fortress in southern Lebanon, perched on a steep rocky outcrop and originally built by Crusader forces in the 12th century. It has been rebuilt and modified by later Muslim and Ottoman rulers and remains an important historical ruin.
The castle occupies a commanding position above the Litani valley and was repeatedly used and contested because of its strategic vantage point. Visitors see surviving curtain walls, towers and the layered masonry that records multiple building phases.
Historically it functioned as a fortified stronghold in the Levantine frontier and saw changes under Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman administrations; the structure today reflects that complex history and later military uses. Conservation and archaeological work have documented its phases but much remains in ruined condition.
The site sits in Nabatieh Governorate in southern Lebanon on a prominent rocky ridge overlooking the Litani valley and surrounding lowlands.
