Beacon Hill is a compact, historic neighborhood immediately east of the Massachusetts State House in central Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the city’s oldest residential areas and was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1962.

The neighborhood is noted for its Federal-style brick rowhouses, narrow gas-lit streets and brick sidewalks. Key points include the Massachusetts State House at the hill’s summit, the narrow cobbled Acorn Street, the small private Louisburg Square, and shopping along Charles Street. Many buildings are private residences, while parts of the area host small boutiques and cafés.

Development took place primarily in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with the State House completed in 1798 to serve as the seat of Massachusetts government. Over time the area has retained much of its 19th-century street plan and architecture through preservation and historic-district protections.

Beacon Hill sits immediately north of Boston Common and the Public Garden, with Back Bay to the west and downtown Boston to the east; the neighborhood is within walking distance of major central Boston landmarks and transit hubs.

  • State House date: Completed in 1798 and designed by Charles Bulfinch, the State House sits at the summit of the hill and marks the neighborhood's highest point.
  • Historic status: Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1962, the area contains dense rows of 19th-century brick townhouses, narrow streets and original gas lamps.
