Boston Common is a public city park in downtown Boston established in 1634 and recognized as the oldest city park in the United States. It functions as a large, open urban green used for recreation, civic events, and as a historic site.

The park contains lawns, tree-lined paths, monuments, and the Frog Pond which serves as an ice rink in winter and a reflecting/splash pool in summer. The Freedom Trail runs through the Common, linking it to multiple historic sites, and many public gatherings and protests take place on its lawns.

Boston Common began as common grazing land for the early Massachusetts Bay Colony and over the centuries was used for militia training, public executions, and civic functions before becoming a formal public park. Its layout and features evolved through 18th and 19th century improvements.

The Common sits adjacent to the Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill, within walking distance of downtown Boston landmarks and government buildings; it is easily reached from several MBTA subway stations.

Boston Common is in downtown Boston adjacent to Park Street. Take the MBTA Red Line to Park Street station (exit onto the Common) or the Green Line to Boylston/Arlington - both are a short walk into the park. From South Station take the Red Line one stop; many bus routes also serve the area. Driving or walking from nearby downtown locations is straightforward as the Common is the city’s central park.

• Enter via Park Street MBTA station (Green Line) or Government Center for the quickest access to the Common and the Freedom Trail start point.
• Go early in the morning to enjoy quieter paths and better light for photos; midday is busiest with tour groups and street performances.
• Start the Freedom Trail at the Common's visitor information area and follow the red‑brick line and markers - the trail links the Common to multiple nearby historic sites that many visitors miss if they only see the park.
