Bay of Kotor
Lake Scenic Adriatic bay with medieval coastal towns
The Bay of Kotor’s sheltered, winding inlet features medieval towns, stone walls and coastal roads; visitors arrive for boat excursions, historic old towns like Kotor and Perast, and seaside dining.
The Bay of Kotor is a ria-like bay on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, characterized by steep karst mountains, narrow inlets and a string of historic coastal towns. The shoreline is dotted with fortified towns, shipyards and marinas and is a major tourist and nautical area.
Key attractions around the bay include the medieval Old Town of Kotor, the Baroque town of Perast and modern marina facilities at Tivat and Porto Montenegro; rocky headlands and fortified ramparts provide dramatic coastal views. The bay’s sheltered waters support yachting, small-boat excursions and inland coastal sightseeing.
Human settlement and fortification have developed along the bay for centuries, with many towns retaining Venetian and later Austro-Hungarian architectural influences and defensive works adapted to the steep shoreline.
The Bay of Kotor lies on Montenegro’s southwestern Adriatic coast and is framed by high mountains that fall directly to the water, forming a sheltered, fjord-like coastal landscape.
- Best viewpoint: The bay's steep surrounding mountains create many elevated viewpoints; the walk up to the San Giovanni fortress above Kotor offers the most comprehensive panorama.
- Maritime traffic: Yachting and cruise ships frequently call at the bay, so expect harbour activity and easier access by boat in summer months.
What to See #
- Kotor Old Town: Kotor Old Town is a fortified medieval core with churches, squares and the Romanesque St. Tryphon Cathedral at its centre.
- Perast: Perast is a small Baroque town on the bay shore known for its waterfront palaces and access to the islets, including Our Lady of the Rocks.
- Tivat and Porto Montenegro: Tivat and Porto Montenegro form a modern marina and yachting hub on the bay's inner shore, supporting cruise and private-boat traffic.
How to Get to Bay of Kotor #
Accessible by road via the Adriatic E65/E80 coastal highway. Tivat Airport is the nearest commercial airport (10-20 minutes to the bay); Podgorica is about 90 km away.
