Bay of Kotor

The Bay of Kotor is a ria-like bay on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, characterized by steep karst mountains, narrow inlets and a string of historic coastal towns. The shoreline is dotted with fortified towns, shipyards and marinas and is a major tourist and nautical area.

Key attractions around the bay include the medieval Old Town of Kotor, the Baroque town of Perast and modern marina facilities at Tivat and Porto Montenegro; rocky headlands and fortified ramparts provide dramatic coastal views. The bay’s sheltered waters support yachting, small-boat excursions and inland coastal sightseeing.

Human settlement and fortification have developed along the bay for centuries, with many towns retaining Venetian and later Austro-Hungarian architectural influences and defensive works adapted to the steep shoreline.
