Tamale Airport (TML): Tamale is a major northern Ghana airport that serves travellers bound for the Upper East Region. Road transfer from Tamale to Bawku takes several hours (typically 4-6 hours depending on stops and road conditions); private transfers cost more than shared buses.
Bolgatanga Airport / Regional airstrips (limited): Bolgatanga is closer to Bawku and has regional air facilities though scheduled flights are limited. Many travellers use Tamale or fly into Accra and continue by road or overnight domestic connections to the north.
Train: Ghana’s passenger rail network is limited in the north and does not provide practical services to Bawku-overland road remains the main option.
Bus / Tro-tro: Long-distance buses and shared minibuses (tro-tros) run between Tamale, Bolgatanga and Bawku. Travel times depend on origin and road quality (Bolgatanga-Bawku is shorter; Tamale-Bawku is longer). Fares are inexpensive and tro-tros are the most common public transport mode.
