The complex presents both ruined defensive structures and restored domestic spaces: visitors can walk the outer walls and courtyard of the older castle and enter the New Castle where period rooms and museum displays are installed. The original fortress was built by the Livonian Order in the 15th century; the New Castle was added in the late 16th century as a residential palace. The site saw damage in later centuries during regional conflicts and was partly ruined before conservation and restoration works in the 20th and 21st centuries converted parts into museum spaces.
