Bauska Castle
Castle 16th-century castle complex overlooking confluence near Bauska
A riverside fortress in Bauska, the castle combines medieval and Renaissance elements and overlooks the Mūsa and Lielupe confluence; visitors tour restored rooms, towers and summer historical events.
Bauska Castle is a combined medieval fortress and Renaissance residence located in the town of Bauska in southern Latvia, near the confluence of the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers. The site includes a 15th-century stronghold and an adjacent late 16th-century New Castle.
The complex presents both ruined defensive structures and restored domestic spaces: visitors can walk the outer walls and courtyard of the older castle and enter the New Castle where period rooms and museum displays are installed. The castle tower and terraces provide clear views over Bauska and the surrounding river landscape. Guided routes explain fortification features and show architectural contrasts between the medieval and Renaissance sections.
The original fortress was built by the Livonian Order in the 15th century; the New Castle was added in the late 16th century as a residential palace. The site saw damage in later centuries during regional conflicts and was partly ruined before conservation and restoration works in the 20th and 21st centuries converted parts into museum spaces.
Sited in central Bauska, the castle sits at the confluence of the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers roughly 60-70 km south of Riga. The town and surrounding lowland river landscape form the immediate setting of the castle.
- Viewing point: Best views are from the castle tower and upper terraces, which overlook the confluence of the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers and the town of Bauska.
- Two distinct structures: The site combines a ruined 15th-century Livonian Order fortress with a more complete late 16th-century residential palace, so expect both exposed masonry and restored period rooms.
What to See #
- Old Castle and New Castle: The medieval stronghold dates from the 15th century while the adjacent Renaissance-style residential wing was added in the late 16th century; both parts are visible on the site today and the New Castle contains museum displays and restored rooms.
- Castle tower and viewpoints: The keep and defensive walls include accessible viewpoints that look over the town and the nearby river junction, offering the clearest panoramic views from the upper levels.
- Museum and exhibitions: On-site museum exhibitions cover local history and the castle's role in regional conflicts; these are housed mainly in the restored New Castle's interior rooms.
