Batthyány Square

Batthyány Square (Batthyány tér) is a public square on the Buda side of Budapest, Hungary, named for Count Lajos Batthyány, Hungary’s first prime minister.

The square sits on the Danube riverfront and is an important local transport node with a metro station and riverboat landing; it provides direct pedestrian access to the riverside promenade and clear views across the river to the Hungarian Parliament. The compact paved square is used for local shops, cafés and transit connections rather than large public events.

It takes its name from Lajos Batthyány, a leading figure in the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution. The square developed in the 19th century as Buda grew into a residential and administrative district and has remained a transport and riverside focal point since then.

The square sits on the Buda bank of the Danube near the center of the city, facing the Parliament building on the Pest side. It is within walking distance of several historic streets on the Buda hill and is served directly by the M2 metro line.
