Batchawana Bay, Ontario

Batchawana Bay is a bay on Lake Superior on Ontario’s northeastern shore, noted for its sandy shoreline and recreational use. It lies at the mouth of the Batchawana River and forms part of the north shore landscape of Lake Superior.

The bay and the adjacent provincial park provide sandy beaches, shoreline suitable for swimming and beachcombing, and campground and day-use facilities for picnics and short stays. Shore fishing and birdwatching are common activities along the wetlands where the river meets the lake.

The area was traditionally used by local Indigenous peoples and later became a focus for fishing and lakeshore travel during European settlement of the Lake Superior shore. The bay’s sheltered waters and river mouth have long been local landmarks for navigation and resource use.

The bay sits roughly 50 km northeast of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor on the north shore of Lake Superior. Highway 17 runs close to the shoreline here, giving direct road access to the park and beaches.
