Batanta

Island Raja Ampat island with rich marine biodiversity

One of Raja Ampat’s larger islands off West Papua, Batanta attracts divers and snorkelers for coral reefs and marine biodiversity, alongside small coastal villages and low jungle hills.

Main image

Batanta is an island in the Raja Ampat archipelago off the Bird’s Head Peninsula of New Guinea, administratively in Southwest Papua, Indonesia. It is one of the primary islands in the Raja Ampat group.

The island is noted for coastal reefs, mangrove areas and marine biodiversity that attract divers and snorkellers; boat-based dive trips use Batanta’s surrounding reefs and channels. Terrestrial habitats include low hills and tropical forest with birdlife typical of the region.

Batanta has been inhabited and used by Papuan communities for generations and forms part of local maritime cultural landscapes. More recently the island has become part of regional marine conservation and tourism networks within Raja Ampat.

Situated in the western Pacific within the Raja Ampat cluster, Batanta lies northwest of the Bird’s Head mainland and is reached mainly by boat from Sorong and other nearby islands.

  • Raja Ampat island: One of the four main islands of the Raja Ampat group, positioned between Waigeo and Salawati and known for marine biodiversity and diving sites.

How to Get to Batanta #

Batanta is one of the main islands of the Raja Ampat archipelago (Southwest Papua). The usual approach is to fly into Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok Airport) and then take a public or charter boat from Sorong harbour - speedboat transfers to the Raja Ampat islands commonly take around 2-4 hours depending on the boat and sea conditions.

There are no road connections; plan transfers and onward boat transport from Sorong (or join a liveaboard) to reach landing points on Batanta.

Tips for Visiting Batanta #

  • Batanta is reached only by boat from Sorong or from nearby Raja Ampat islands - include it on a multi‑day liveaboard or arrange a charter rather than expecting a frequent public service.
  • Plan marine activities (diving/snorkel) early in the day when seas are calmer and visibility is best; dive/skiff operators based in Sorong or Waisai know the local reefs and can recommend the least visited sites.
  • Hire local guides or use community‑based operators to see inland highlights and villages - many visitors focus on reefs and miss Batanta's mangrove fringes and cultural sites unless they use a knowledgeable local operator.

Best Time to Visit Batanta #

Aim for the drier months (May-October) for the best sea conditions, clearer water and more reliable access to the island.

Dry season (best for diving and boat access)
May-October · ~26-30 °C
Drier weather, calmer seas and better underwater visibility - the most reliable window for diving, snorkeling and island-hopping.
Wet season (heavier rain, rougher seas)
November-April · ~24-28 °C
More frequent rain and rougher sea conditions can affect boat access and visibility; travel plans are more weather-dependent.
