Batan Island is the principal island of the Batanes province in the northern Philippines, forming the central part of the small Batanes archipelago. It is the administrative and transport centre of the province and the island with the largest population.

Key attractions include the provincial capital Basco with its airport and port facilities, volcanic landscapes dominated by Mount Iraya, and coastal features such as boulder beaches and cliffs. Visitors use the island as a base to explore surrounding smaller islands, Ivatan culture and local handicrafts.

The island’s geology is volcanic, with Mount Iraya a prominent peak that has shaped the island’s terrain and soils. Local livelihoods combine fishing, farming and services centred on Basco.

Batan lies at the northern extremity of the Philippine archipelago, between Luzon and Taiwan, and is accessible by air or by inter-island sea connections to other Batanes islands.
