Bass Rock
Island Small volcanic island hosting one of world's gannet colonies
Granite island in the Firth of Forth with a ruined castle and a major northern gannet colony. Boat trips let birdwatchers and photographers observe thousands of seabirds at close range.
Bass Rock is a steep volcanic island in the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland, United Kingdom, notable for its dense seabird colony and prominent white appearance when viewed from shore. The rock rises to about 107 metres above sea level and dominates the local seascape.
A major highlight is the enormous colony of northern gannets that breeds on the rock; the colony numbers in the tens of thousands and is the largest single‑rock gannet colony in the world. The island also contains visible remains of a castle complex and a lighthouse, and boat trips around the rock are a popular way to observe wildlife and the cliffs at close range.
The site has been used for defensive purposes and incarceration since the medieval period; a castle occupied the island from the Middle Ages and it was later used as a state prison in the 17th century. The island’s lighthouse and ancillary structures date from later maritime eras and the site has been the subject of natural history study for over a century.
Bass Rock sits about 2 kilometres off the coast from the town of North Berwick, in the Firth of Forth, roughly east of Edinburgh on Scotland’s east coast. The rock is visible from the adjacent shoreline and is most commonly accessed or viewed from North Berwick.
- Viewing and access: Best viewing is from the North Berwick coast and from licensed wildlife boat trips during the breeding season, typically April to August.
- Landing restrictions: Landing is limited and usually requires prior arrangement with licensed operators or permission from the island's owners.
What to See #
- Gannet colony: Perched on a steep volcanic plug rising to about 107 metres above sea level, the island supports the world's largest single‑rock colony of northern gannets and has a small cluster of ruined castle remains and a lighthouse complex.
- Castle and fortifications: Ruined medieval castle and former prison complex occupying terraces on the rock, with visible masonry dating from medieval and post‑medieval phases.
- Lighthouse and buildings: Lighthouse and keeper's buildings located on the summit ridge, historically important for navigation in the Firth of Forth (landing and internal access are restricted).
How to Get to Bass Rock #
Boat tours to Bass Rock depart from North Berwick (about 30-40 minutes by train from Edinburgh). The island is only accessible by sea; private charter boats or organised wildlife cruises are the standard ways to visit during the breeding season.
Tips for Visiting Bass Rock #
- Book a wildlife boat trip from North Berwick during spring and summer to see the gannet colony
- Bring binoculars - the island is best appreciated from sea level where the birds are at eye height
- Prepare for strong winds and sun reflection off the water; clothing should be windproof and layered
Best Time to Visit Bass Rock #
Late spring and summer bring the bird spectacle and the best chances of boat access; weather can still be changeable.
