Basilica of San Frediano is a Romanesque church in the historic centre of Lucca, Tuscany, recognised for its striking exterior mosaic. The mosaic, on the western façade, depicts Christ in Majesty and dates from the medieval period.

The church interior follows a Romanesque plan with columns and an aisleed nave and contains medieval fabric and later additions. San Frediano is often visited for its façade mosaic and its place in Lucca’s ensemble of Romanesque churches.

The present Romanesque building dates mainly to the 12th century, though the site has earlier Christian origins and the church has been maintained and altered across the centuries.

San Frediano stands within Lucca’s compact historic centre, among streets and piazzas that contain several other medieval and Renaissance monuments.

• Façade mosaic: The façade features a large, well-preserved 12th-13th century mosaic which is a principal visual highlight of the church exterior.

San Frediano sits within Lucca’s medieval center. From Lucca station (Lucca Stazione FS), it is a 20-25 minute walk (about 1.6 km) through the city walls along Via Fillungo; taxis and local buses (e.g., lines toward the historic center) also drop nearby. If arriving by car, park outside the walls and enter on foot - the old center is largely pedestrianized.

• Enter through the narrow side street (Via San Frediano) to catch the mosaic on the façade as it lightens in the late afternoon - photographers like the low sun.
• Look down: the worn, polished edges of a few steps inside mark centuries of foot traffic; pause and touch one to feel it.
• Don't skip the small chapels along the left aisle - the fresco fragments and tombstones are where local Luccans leave flowers and notes.
