Baščaršija is the historic Ottoman-era bazaar and old town quarter of Sarajevo, established in the 15th century and forming the city’s traditional commercial and cultural centre. It remains a focal point for crafts, food and religious sites.
The area comprises a dense network of narrow, cobbled streets lined with small shops selling handicrafts, traditional coffeehouses and eateries; many buildings date back to the Ottoman period. Key points in the quarter include a central public fountain and several historic mosques and religious complexes that are easily reached on foot.
Founded in the 15th century as a market quarter by the Ottoman governor of the region, the district grew into Sarajevo’s principal commercial hub and retained its Ottoman urban character through subsequent centuries. It has continued as a living historic district with shops and religious buildings still in active use.
Baščaršija sits in the Stari Grad (Old Town) area of Sarajevo, in the city’s historic centre; the precinct is compact and pedestrian-friendly, surrounded by the modern parts of the city.
