Baritú National Park is a protected area in Salta Province, Argentina, conserving montane and subtropical forest in the country’s far northwest. The park forms part of the Southern Andean Yungas, an important corridor for biodiversity in the region.

Dense forest, steep valleys and riverine habitats characterise the park, which supports a diversity of plant and animal species typical of the Yungas belt. Trails and limited visitor facilities provide opportunities for wildlife observation and scientific study but the area remains relatively remote.

Established to protect the Yungas forest and associated wildlife, the park has been managed for conservation of regional flora and fauna and to maintain ecological connectivity with neighbouring protected areas. It is recognised for its conservation value within Argentina’s network of national parks.

The park is situated in the northwest of Salta Province, near the border with Bolivia, occupying rugged terrain of the Andean foothills and Yungas forest zone.

  • Ecosystems: The park protects montane and subtropical forests of the Yungas region and is important for regional biodiversity and endemics.
  • Access: Access is remote and the park is best reached from Salta province transport hubs; permits and local guidance are advisable for visits.

Tips for Visiting Baritú National Park #

  • Plan for the dry season (roughly May-September) when trails and forest tracks are far more passable and heavy rains are less likely to close access.
  • Contact Argentina's Administración de Parques Nacionales or the Salta provincial tourist office well before your trip - Baritú is remote and visits are best arranged in advance so you can confirm access, permits and recommended routes.
  • Go at first light for the best wildlife activity and birdwatching; because the park is remote, early starts make the most of short daylight windows and increase chances of sightings.
  • Allow extra travel time from Salta-region towns: roads into Baritú are long and can be slow, so plan logistics (fuel, 4x4 transfer or guide) rather than expecting easy drop-in access.

Visit during the austral winter/dry season (May-September) for cooler, drier conditions and easier wildlife viewing and hiking.

Dry season (best time)
