Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains in Mpumalanga, South Africa, are a geological region renowned for exceptionally well-preserved Archean rock formations that record conditions from more than 3 billion years ago. The area is globally important for studies of early Earth history.

These rocks formed during the Archean eon and preserve volcanic-sedimentary successions that document early Earth processes; the region has also seen mining activity in more recent centuries, which partly shaped access to some outcrops.

The mountains lie in eastern Mpumalanga province near the town of Barberton in South Africa, close to international borders in the southeastern portion of the country.

• Barberton Greenstone Belt: The Barberton Greenstone Belt contains exceptionally well-preserved Archean volcanic and sedimentary rock sequences that record early Earth processes and environments. These rocks include some of the oldest known supracrustal rocks on Earth, with ages in the range of about 3.2 to 3.6 billion years.
• Key rock formations and outcrops: Numerous geological outcrops, felsic and mafic volcanic sequences and banded iron formations provide key sites for scientific study of early crust formation and early life indicators.
