Barbados launched the 12-month Welcome Stamp in 2020 and has kept it running since, making it one of the longest-established nomad visas anywhere. It’s a short online application with a flat fee, and holders don’t pay Barbados income tax on their remote earnings. Visitors from many countries can also come without a visa and extend their stay with Immigration. This page covers how it all works as of October 2026, plus tax and everyday money.

Cabinet has confirmed the Welcome Stamp until 31 December 2026, and no decision on 2027 had been announced at the time of writing. Check the official application site before you apply or plan a renewal.

The Barbados Welcome Stamp#

The Welcome Stamp is a 12-month visa created under Barbados’s Remote Employment Act. It lets remote workers and their families live on the island while working for employers or clients based elsewhere.

Who Can Get the Welcome Stamp#

The stamp is open to individuals and families whose work is location-independent:

  • Employees of companies based outside Barbados.
  • Freelancers and business owners whose clients and business are outside Barbados.

Applicants must be 18 or over. You and your family can’t take employment from, or offer services to, Barbadian citizens, residents or businesses in Barbados. The application asks whether you have ever been convicted of a serious criminal offence.

Income Requirement#

You must expect to earn at least $50,000 (BBD 100,000) over the 12 months of the stamp, and you certify this on the application. The form also allows applicants to show instead that they have the means to support themselves and any family coming with them during the stay.

Documents You Need#

  • A passport-sized photo of the main applicant and each family member over 18.
  • The bio-data page of the passport of every applicant.
  • Proof of relationship for a spouse, partner or children.

The form also asks for your employer or business details, passport details, proposed date of arrival and whether children will attend school. Hold health insurance for the whole stay; the programme has treated it as a requirement, and you may be asked for proof.

Length and Renewals#

The Welcome Stamp lasts 12 months, with multiple entries. When it ends you can reapply through the same online form, which handles renewals as well as new applications, and pay the fee again. Because the programme is currently confirmed only to the end of 2026, ask the Welcome Stamp team how a stamp issued now or a renewal would run past that date.

Welcome Stamp Fees#

  • $2,000 for an individual.
  • $3,000 for a family bundle.

Fees are non-refundable and are paid only after your application is approved, within 28 days of approval.

How to Apply#

  1. Fill in the online application at barbadoswelcomestamp.bb and upload your photos, passport pages and proof of relationship.
  2. Wait for a decision, which the tourism authority says is typically within seven business days.
  3. Pay the fee within 28 days of approval.
  4. Travel to Barbados and complete the online Immigration and Customs Form, which opens 72 hours before arrival. Your stamp is linked to your passport.

You can apply from abroad or while visiting Barbados.

Bringing Your Family#

A spouse or partner and children can be included in one family application for the $3,000 family fee. School is compulsory from 5 to 16. Children on the stamp can go to private schools, to public schools for a small fee through the Ministry of Education, or be home-schooled, without a separate student visa application. Some public secondary schools have limited places.

Tax on the Welcome Stamp#

Welcome Stamp holders aren’t liable for Barbados income tax on the remote income they earn from outside the island, under the Remote Employment Act. You still pay 17.5% VAT on goods and services you buy locally. If you start a business that earns in Barbados, normal tax rules apply.

Visa-Free Stays and Extensions#

Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, the EU, most Commonwealth countries and many others can visit Barbados without a visa. Other nationalities need an entry visa, applied for online through the Immigration Department.

  • Length of stay: the immigration officer sets your permitted stay on arrival, usually in line with your return or onward ticket. You need a passport valid for the whole trip, a return ticket, an address and evidence you can support yourself.
  • Extensions: apply in person at Immigration Department headquarters in Bridgetown before your permitted stay ends, with Form B, your passport, a photo, a copy of your passport’s bio-data page and a ticket covering the new dates. The Immigration Department lists a $100 application fee, and how long you’re granted is at the officer’s discretion.
  • Work: visitors can’t work for Barbadian employers or clients. Remote work for foreign clients on a long visitor stay is a grey area, which is what the Welcome Stamp is designed to solve.

Overstays#

Staying past the date in your passport without an approved extension is an offence and can lead to fines, detention, removal and difficulty returning. Apply for an extension early, and keep your Welcome Stamp approval with you while travelling.

Tax#

This is a general guide, not tax advice. Barbados taxes individuals on residence and domicile.

  • Residence: a non-national is tax resident if present in Barbados for more than 182 days in a calendar year.
  • Rates: residents pay 12.5% on taxable income up to BBD 50,000 and 28.5% above that, after a personal allowance of BBD 25,000.
  • Foreign income: residents who are also domiciled in Barbados are taxed on worldwide income. Residents who aren’t domiciled, which covers most foreigners, are taxed on Barbados income and on foreign income only when it’s remitted to Barbados.
  • Welcome Stamp holders are exempt from Barbados income tax on their remote income, as above.

Your home country may still tax you, especially if you’re a US citizen. Our taxes for digital nomads guide explains the general principles.

Barbados Dollars and US Dollars#

Barbados uses the Barbados dollar (BBD), fixed at BBD 2 to US$1. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere at that rate, but change usually comes back in Barbados dollars, and prices are often shown in BBD, so check which currency a price is in. Cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels; keep cash for buses, ZRs, rum shops and fish fries.

ATMs, Payments and Bank Accounts#

ATMs are common in towns and supermarkets and dispense Barbados dollars. Foreign cards may pay a fee to the local bank and their own bank, and you should decline the machine’s currency conversion.

The main banks include Republic Bank, CIBC Caribbean and First Citizens. Opening an account as a foreigner takes time and paperwork, usually a passport, proof of address, a reference letter from your home bank and proof of income, plus your Welcome Stamp approval. Many nomads simply use foreign cards and Wise or Revolut for the year, and open a local account only if they need to pay rent or bills locally.
