Bara, Syria

Bara (al-Bara) is an archaeological site in Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria noted for its well-preserved ruins from the late Roman and Byzantine period. It is one of the settlements often called the Dead Cities, retaining substantial stone houses and church buildings.

The visible remains include domestic architecture, commercial structures and several churches with carved stone details; these features attract study for rural settlement and ecclesiastical architecture of Late Antiquity. The site was occupied in the Roman and Byzantine eras and was abandoned in the early medieval period, leaving archaeological and architectural remains rather than a continuous modern settlement.

Bara sits in Syria’s limestone highlands within Idlib Governorate and forms part of the concentration of ruined villages and towns distributed across that landscape.
