Banteay Chhmar
Historical Site Vast ruined temple complex with intricate bas-reliefs
In remote Banteay Meanchey province, Banteay Chhmar preserves an extensive 12th‑century temple with long bas‑reliefs and dozens of carved faces attributed to Jayavarman VII. Visitors come for off‑road archaeology and reliefs.
Banteay Chhmar is a large late 12th to early 13th-century temple complex in northwestern Cambodia, noted for its extensive bas-reliefs and carved face towers. It is one of the major provincial monuments from the Jayavarman VII period.
The complex features long galleries of bas-relief sculpture, large enclosure walls, and carved towers with faces that echo the style of other Jayavarman VII monuments. Because it is less visited, the site offers a more solitary experience among expansive, partly unrestored structures.
Built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the late 12th to early 13th century, the site served religious and memorial functions and contains iconography associated with the king and his regime. Preservation and conservation have been ongoing but the site remains remote compared with Angkor.
Banteay Chhmar is located in Banteay Meanchey province in northwestern Cambodia, relatively close to the Thai border and away from the main tourist centers of Siem Reap.
- Remote location and access: The complex is remote and less visited than Angkor, so access typically requires a longer road journey and basic visitor facilities on site may be limited.
What to See #
- Main temple enclosure: The main temple enclosure with galleries and bas-reliefs depicting historic and religious scenes, notable for its size and extensive sculptural program.
- Peripheral galleries and bas-reliefs: Peripheral galleries and collapsed towers that show carved faces and long stretches of relief sculpture, often less-visited and more atmospheric than major Angkor sites.
How to Get to Banteay Chhmar #
Banteay Chhmar is a remote temple in Banteay Meanchey province and is accessed by road from Siem Reap or Sisophon. The site requires a long overland transfer (several hours) over provincial roads-many visitors go by private car, 4x4 or as part of an organized tour and often stay overnight in the nearby area. Expect the final approach to use rural roads with limited public-transport options, so plan for a full‑day trip or an overnight visit.
Tips for Visiting Banteay Chhmar #
- Treat Banteay Chhmar as a remote, multi‑hour excursion from Siem Reap-plan a full day or an overnight stay in the nearby village because the drive is long and roads can be rough.
- Hire a local guide from Banteay Chhmar village to support the community and to get better access and interpretation of the extensive bas‑reliefs; visiting at sunrise or sunset rewards you with dramatic light and far fewer visitors than the mid‑day period.
