Banhine National Park is a protected area in Gaza Province in southern Mozambique that covers semi-arid plains punctuated by seasonal pans and wetlands. It functions as an important refuge for migratory and resident birdlife and supports a range of savanna species adapted to variable water availability.
The landscape is characterised by flat to gently undulating plains, grassy and shrub vegetation, and intermittent shallow floodplains that become wetter in the rainy season. Protection efforts focus on maintaining the ecological functions of the seasonal wetlands and the surrounding savanna.
The park is situated in central Gaza Province, inland from the Mozambican coast; access is by road from provincial towns, with the nearest larger urban centres several hours’ drive depending on condition of roads and season.
