Bandhavgarh National Park is a protected area in Madhya Pradesh, India, established as a national park in 1968 and widely known for its high density of Bengal tigers. It lies in the Vindhya Hills and combines forests, meadows and rocky terrain.

The park is noted for its tiger population and for sightings of leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar and several deer species, plus a diverse bird community. The Tala zone is particularly popular with wildlife photographers and safari operators because of frequent large-cat activity.

The area has a long history of royal and local management; a hilltop fort within the park gives the area its name. The site was progressively protected through the 20th century, gaining national park status in 1968 and further conservation attention thereafter.

Bandhavgarh sits in eastern Madhya Pradesh near the town of Umaria, in central India. Access is typically from nearby towns by road and by limited regional rail connections.

  • Best time to visit: Best chance to see large mammals is during the dry season when animals concentrate at permanent waterholes, typically October to June.
  • Tala zone note: The Tala zone is the park's most active area for tiger sightings and attracts most photographic safaris, so permits and advance bookings are advisable.

What to See #

  • Tala Zone: Contains several distinct safari zones; the most-visited is the Tala zone, which is known for frequent tiger sightings and accessible jeep safari routes.
  • Bandhavgarh Fort: An ancient hilltop stronghold located within the park boundaries, visible from several vantage points and linked to local legends and historic use of the landscape.
  • Core forest and grassland areas: A mix of sal forest, grassland and rocky outcrops that supports a wide range of mammals and birds, and provides the park's core wildlife habitats.
