Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument in northern New Mexico protects a landscape of pueblo ruins and cliff dwellings in Frijoles Canyon on the Pajarito Plateau. The site preserves masonry village structures and carved cavates created by Ancestral Pueblo communities.

Trails through Frijoles Canyon lead to visible masonry pueblos, plazas and cliff-side rooms; the popular Alcove House requires climbing steps and ladders to reach a high cave dwelling. An accessible visitor center provides archaeological exhibits and orientation before hikers enter the canyon routes.

The ruins reflect several centuries of Ancestral Pueblo habitation and village life, with construction and use concentrated between roughly 1150 and 1600 CE. The area was later set aside for protection and study, with modern archaeological work documenting the sites and stabilizing structures for public visitation.

The monument lies near Los Alamos on the Pajarito Plateau in northern New Mexico, accessed by road from regional towns and serving as a cultural and natural preserve in the Jemez Mountains region.
