Banbhore (Bhambhore) is an archaeological site on the Sindh coast of Pakistan containing the remains of a fortified settlement and mosque complex with layers spanning late antiquity and the early medieval period. The site is associated in historical sources with an early Arab conquest of the region in the 8th century.
Excavations have exposed walls, street layouts and a mosque precinct that illustrate an urbanised port settlement active in the early Islamic era and earlier periods. The material record includes masonry architecture and artefacts typical of coastal trading towns.
Scholarly interest has focused on identification of the site with the port of Debal, recorded in Arab chronicles as the point of entry during the campaigns of the early Umayyad period; archaeological work has aimed to link physical remains with historical narratives.
The ruins lie near the modern village of Bhambhore close to the Indus delta, approximately 60 to 70 km east of Karachi on the Sindh coastal plain, and are accessible by road from regional towns.
