Featured Image

The Banaue Rice Terraces are carved into the mountains of Ifugao province in northern Luzon and form part of the larger Ifugao rice-terrace landscape created by the indigenous Ifugao people. The terraces are an extensive cultural landscape noted for traditional wet-rice cultivation on steep slopes.

Key viewing points include the Banaue viewpoint above the town and the more remote Batad amphitheatre of terraces, both giving clear views of stepped fields, irrigation channels and small terrace villages. Many visitors combine short hikes with village visits and homestays to experience local agricultural practices.

The terraces were constructed and maintained over many generations using local techniques of stone-and-soil embankments and gravity-fed irrigation from mountain streams; the landscape is often described as having been shaped over at least two millennia. The rice terraces form part of the wider cultural identity and subsistence economy of the Ifugao people.

The terraces are located in Ifugao province in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines; the town of Banaue serves as the main access point and the terraces lie at elevations commonly around 1,000-1,500 metres above sea level.

  • Construction and irrigation: Carved into the mountains by the Ifugao people using stone and mud walls and an indigenous irrigation system that diverts mountain streams, with a landscape shaped over many generations.
  • Visitor tip: Best visited with local guides for access to remote viewpoints and to arrange homestays in terrace villages such as Batad and Bangaan.

  • Banaue viewpoint: Local viewpoints near the town of Banaue that provide panoramic views over the principal terrace landscapes, commonly used by visitors for sunrise and sunset photography.
