Adriatic Coast (Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania)

High summer arrives in July and August when the Dalmatian coast regularly hits the high 20s and low 30s°C; the water is pleasantly warm for swimming, sailing and reef-free snorkeling. Crowds peak, especially in Dubrovnik’s old town and Hvar’s ports, and booking ahead is essential; some inland towns can be stiflingly hot without sea breezes. For active travelers, mornings are best for hiking; beware of busy ferries, and note that tiny island services may limit runs to main routes.

Dinaric Mountains & Interior (Bosnia & Herzegovina, inland Montenegro, northern Albania, western Serbia)

July and August are warm to hot in the lower valleys with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can be dramatic and sudden; higher altitudes stay pleasantly cool, providing relief for hikers and climbers. Popular high routes and national parks draw local and international hikers, so expect busier lodges and necessary reservations. Pack for heat in the valleys, but also for cool nights above 1,500-2,000 metres and be prepared for fast-changing mountain weather.

Pannonian & Central Plains (Serbia, northern Croatia - Slavonia & Vojvodina, northern Bosnia)

July and August are the hottest months-long, hot spells can push cities like Belgrade into the low-to-mid 30s°C and create heavy, humid nights. Thunderstorms help alleviate heat but can be intense and local flooding has occurred historically; urban areas are lively with festivals and nightlife. Plan daytime sightseeing earlier or later in the day, seek shaded architecture and parks during peak heat, and expect larger crowds at cultural events.

Greek Mainland & Aegean Islands (Greece)

July and August are peak summer: long, hot, dry days on the mainland often push Athens into the low-to-mid 30s°C, while the islands remain hot but bearable thanks to the persistent meltemi in the Aegean. Tourist numbers and prices peak, especially on Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, and island ferries and flights must be booked well ahead. For comfort, schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, and be aware that very hot spells and occasional wildfires are a risk in the hottest periods.

North Macedonia & Kosovo Highlands (North Macedonia, Kosovo, parts of southern Serbia)

July and August are the warmest months: summers are hot in valleys like the Vardar basin while mountain summits remain pleasantly cool, providing a useful escape from the heat. Afternoon thunderstorms can form over the highest peaks, occasionally causing flashier river conditions and muddy trails. This is festival season in many towns, so expect lively cultural events; pack summer clothing, but include a sweater for cool evenings above 1,200 metres.

Bulgarian & Romanian Black Sea Coast and Danubian Lowlands (Bulgaria, Romania - Black Sea coast and Danube plains)

July and August are the warmest months with hot days along the Danube and Black Sea; air temperatures regularly reach high 20s to low 30s°C and humidity can be noticeable on the plains. Coastal resorts are busiest, and the Delta receives nature tourists and birders in greater numbers; sea breezes ease the heat onshore. Travelers should avoid peak midday sun, book coastal accommodation early and be mindful of insect presence in wetland areas.
