Baliceaux is a small island in the Grenadines, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, located in the southern Caribbean. It is historically notable as the site where many indigenous Carib people were held in 1796 after British military campaigns.

The island is visited for its historical significance, including memorial sites relating to the 1796 exile, and for its surrounding coral reef which attracts snorkellers and divers. There are no permanent settlements and visits are typically day trips from nearby inhabited islands such as Bequia.

Following the Carib Wars on St Vincent in the late 18th century, British forces detained large numbers of indigenous people on Baliceaux in 1796; many died there before survivors were deported to Roatán and elsewhere. The island remains a site of historical memory for the region.

Baliceaux lies in the Grenadines chain between the islands of St Vincent and Bequia, within the Grenadines Parish. It is small and uninhabited, reachable by boat from neighbouring islands.

  • 1796 exile and aftermath: In 1796 the British forcibly relocated many of the indigenous Carib (Kalinago) population to this island before deporting survivors overseas; it is remembered for high mortality during that period.

What to See #

  • Exile site and memorial: A small, presently uninhabited island in the Grenadines that served as the principal British exile site for the indigenous Carib population of St Vincent following the 1795-1797 conflicts.
  • Marine environment: Fringing coral reefs and clear waters around the island support diving and snorkelling but there are no permanent tourist facilities on the island itself.

How to Get to Baliceaux #

The usual departure point is Bequia’s Port Elizabeth (Paget Farm). Licensed boat operators run occasional passage to Baliceaux-expect a 15-40 minute ride depending on weather and boat type. There are no services on the island; landing is weather-dependent and should be arranged through a local operator who knows safe landing spots and tide conditions.

Tips for Visiting Baliceaux #

  • Book a licensed boat operator from Bequia's Port Elizabeth rather than attempting to land independently-skippers know safe landing points and tides.
  • Bring plenty of water, shade and reef-safe sunscreen; there are no facilities or fresh water on the island.
  • Treat Baliceaux as a memorial site: stay on paths around any marked monuments and ask local guides about the history before taking photos.
  • Combine a visit with a stop at Bequia's museum or the old slave burial ground at Carpenters Bay to put the island's story in context.
