Balangan Beach
Beach Sandy Bali beach popular for surfing and sunsets
Balangan Beach on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula draws surfers to its reef break and long sandy bay; visitors come for surf camps, cliff-top viewpoints, beachfront warungs and sunset walks.
Balangan Beach is a coastal beach on the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali, Indonesia, known for its white sand, cliff-backed shoreline and surfable reef break. It is a regional surf and beach destination rather than a large developed resort.
The beach offers a long, open sandy bay and a reef break offshore that commonly produces long left-hand waves suited to experienced surfers. Cliff-top paths and low-rise local cafes and warungs provide viewpoints and basic visitor facilities.
There is no large historical complex on site; the location is primarily used for recreation, surfing and shoreline relaxation. Facilities are modest and largely oriented to day visitors and surfers.
Balangan lies on Bali’s southern Bukit Peninsula within Badung Regency, south of Denpasar and in the same general area as Uluwatu and Jimbaran.
- Best time to visit: Most visitors favour late afternoon for sunset views from the clifftop paths and beach access routes; surf season is strongest during Bali's dry months.
What to See #
- Main beach: The main sandy bay with a shoreline framed by low cliffs and a long white-sand beach popular for sunbathing and walking.
- Balangan reef (surf break): A reef break offshore that produces consistent left-hand waves, making the spot popular with surfers at mid to high tide during the dry season.
How to Get to Balangan Beach #
Balangan is on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. From Ngurah Rai International Airport, allow 45-60 minutes by car (depending on traffic) via the Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai and the roads toward Uluwatu/Bukit. From the Uluwatu temple area and Padang Padang it is roughly 15-25 minutes. Motorbike is the typical mode for many visitors; parking is available at the clifftop lot above the beach.
Tips for Visiting Balangan Beach #
- Go at low-to-mid tide to walk the foreshore and see the reef; sunrise is uncrowded and offers the best coastal light for photos.
- Park at the clifftop car park and use the stairs-the descent is steep and uneven, so wear footwear with grip.
- If planning to surf, hire a board and instructor from a local surf school in Jimbaran/Bukit; conditions vary rapidly with swell and wind.
