The Bakony is a hilly, forested mountain range in northwestern Hungary and part of the Transdanubian Mountains. It is characterized by wooded plateaus, limestone outcrops and karst features and is a major regional natural area.
The Bakony has a long human presence with rural settlements, forestry and traditional land uses shaping the landscape over centuries. Historical uses included pasture, timber production and small-scale mining in places.
The range lies in Transdanubia north of Lake Balaton and west of the central Hungarian plain, within easy reach of cities such as Veszprém and reachable from Budapest by road in a few hours.
