Baintha Brakk
Mountain Karakoram peak 'The Ogre', extremely challenging climb.
A remote granite peak in the Karakoram of Gilgit‑Baltistan, Baintha Brakk (the Ogre) attracts technical alpinists for difficult rock routes and expedition climbing rather than casual tourism.
Baintha Brakk, commonly known as The Ogre, is a jagged granite peak in the Panmah Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It rises to over 7,000 metres and is famed for its steep, technical faces.
Only highly experienced mountaineers attempt climbs here because of long, technical rock and mixed routes, remote approach logistics and unpredictable weather. The peak’s steep granite towers and complex ridgelines make it a test piece for elite alpinists rather than a typical trekking objective.
The mountain’s first known successful ascent occurred in 1977 by a British expedition led by well-known climbers; subsequent climbs have been rare and often notable for technical difficulty and serious objective hazards. The mountain has a reputation for long, committing climbs and difficult descents.
Baintha Brakk lies deep in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan, situated among glaciated valleys and high peaks of Gilgit-Baltistan and accessed via long approaches from nearest settlements and basecamps.
- Climbing difficulty: The peak is one of the most technically difficult 7,000-metre mountains in the Karakoram, attracting experienced high-altitude climbers for extremely challenging alpine-style routes.
