Hispar Muztagh

The Hispar Muztagh is a glaciated subrange of the Karakoram located in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. It contains several high peaks and rugged ridges and forms part of the complex high-mountain topography of the Karakoram.

The range is traversed by glaciers and icefalls and is primarily visited by technical mountaineering expeditions rather than general tourism. Its terrain includes steep rock faces, glaciated cols and long glacier approaches.

The subrange has been the focus of exploratory and climbing expeditions from the early 20th century onward; mapped mountaineering activity increased in the mid- and late 20th century as climbers attempted its major summits.

The Hispar Muztagh lies in the northern Pakistan Karakoram, within Gilgit-Baltistan, and forms part of the high-mountain backbone separating valleys in the region.

• High peaks: Contains multiple 7,000-metre peaks including Distaghil Sar at 7,885 metres, making it one of the high subranges of the Karakoram.

• Distaghil Sar (major summit): Distaghil Sar is the highest named peak of the subrange, with a summit elevation recorded at 7,885 metres.
• Hispar Glacier and glaciation: Hispar Glacier forms one of the principal glacial systems in the area and connects with adjacent ice streams to create a high-mountain glaciated landscape used by technical mountaineering expeditions.

• Plan any visit or climb for the high summer season (roughly June-August) when access is most stable and weather windows for high routes are likeliest.
• Arrange logistics, route planning and any required local permits through a reputable operator based in Gilgit-this region is remote and access, transport over glaciers and border formalities are best handled locally.
• Treat the area as serious alpine and glacial terrain: the approaches involve long glacier travel and technical climbing, so factor guided leadership, proper glacier equipment and acclimatization into your itinerary.
