The Bailong Elevator is a glass-enclosed multi-deck lift installed on a steep sandstone cliff in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Zhangjiajie, Hunan province. It provides rapid public access from the valley floor up to cliff-top walking routes and viewpoints.
The elevator’s transparent cabins give expansive views of the surrounding sandstone pillars and forested ravines as it ascends a vertical cliff face, and it is commonly cited as one of the tallest outdoor glass lifts in the world. The installation is used primarily by tourists to reach the Yuanjiajie plateau without a long uphill hike.
The structure was constructed and opened in the early 2000s and since opening has been a major access point into the scenic area, reducing travel time to the high viewing platforms and trails. It is located inside the Wulingyuan UNESCO-listed area and operates within park rules and ticketing systems.

From Zhangjiajie city or Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, visitors typically take a coach/tour bus or taxi to the Wulingyuan/Yuanjiajie park entrances; once inside the park follow signs/paths to Yuanjiajie where the elevator is located-it is reached on foot from the park pathways or via internal park shuttle services.
Tips for Visiting Bailong Elevator #
- Take the elevator early in the day or later in the afternoon on weekdays to avoid the longest queues at peak tourist hours; lines can become very long during high season.
- Buy your Zhangjiajie park entry and any elevator tickets as soon as you enter the park or online where available, since the elevator is inside the park and admission controls determine access times.
- After the ride, follow the Yuanjiajie trails rather than turning straight back-many visitors ride the elevator only for the views and miss the outstanding cliff-top walks and viewpoints above the elevator.
