Wulingyuan
Historical Site Scenic sandstone pillars and UNESCO World Heritage site
Wulingyuan in Hunan features thousands of quartz-sandstone pillars, caves and ravines clustered in Zhangjiajie’s parks; tourists hike, ride cable cars and photograph the vertical karst formations that define the landscape.
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area in Hunan province, China, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for thousands of tall quartz-sandstone pillars, deep ravines and subtropical forest. The protected area includes multiple parks and reserves that together form the visually arresting karst landscape.
Major visitor highlights include Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the Tianzi Mountain area and Yuanjiajie, all noted for vertical sandstone pillars-more than 3,000 in the broader scenic area-with many individual columns exceeding 200 metres in height. Walkways, boardwalks, cable cars and the glass Bailong Elevator give access to dramatic cliff-top viewpoints.
Geological uplift and long-term erosion produced the pillar landscape; the area has been a protected scenic site since the late 20th century and attracts international visitors for hiking, photography and sightseeing.
Wulingyuan lies in northwestern Hunan province, approximately 30-40 kilometres north of the city of Zhangjiajie, and is accessed by road, park buses, cable cars and regional flights to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport.
- Pillar formations: The scenic area contains more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars and peaks, many rising over 200 metres above the valley floor.
- Access and viewpoints: Cable cars and the Bailong Elevator provide easier access to high viewpoints and are useful for visitors seeking panoramic views with reduced hiking.
What to See #
- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the original protected core containing many of the tall quartz-sandstone pillars that characterise the wider area.
- Tianzi Mountain: Tianzi Mountain features dramatic pillar formations and panoramic viewpoints that are accessed by walking trails and cable cars.
- Yuanjiajie and 'Avatar' area: Yuanjiajie (including the 'Avatar' Hallelujah Mountain) contains some of the most famous solitary pillars and lookout platforms used for skyline views.
- Bailong Elevator: Bailong Elevator is a glass lift installed on a cliff face that rises about 326 metres and provides rapid vertical access from valley to plateau.

Tips for Visiting Wulingyuan #

- Use the park shuttle buses and the Bailong (hundred‑dragon) Elevator to reach Yuanjiajie quickly rather than attempting long uphill treks; this saves time and gets you to the best viewpoints earlier in the day.
