Baidicheng, commonly called White Emperor City, is a historic temple complex and hilltop settlement on the northern bank of the Yangtze River in Fengjie County, Chongqing municipality, China. It is closely associated with the dramatic gorge landscape of the upper Yangtze.
The site comprises temples, pavilions and gates built on a rocky promontory rising from the river, and it is visited for its historic buildings and views over the Yangtze Gorge system. The surviving structures reflect multiple periods of rebuilding, notably during later imperial dynasties.
Baidicheng has long-standing cultural associations, including legends and literary references dating back to early Chinese history and the Three Kingdoms era; it developed as a religious and commemorative site over many centuries. Many surviving structures are later reconstructions that preserve traditional architectural forms.
The complex stands above the Yangtze River near Fengjie County and is commonly reached by river cruise or by road from Chongqing; it lies at the edge of the Three Gorges region downstream of the Three Gorges Dam area.

How to Get to Baidicheng #
Ferries and tourist boats depart from Fengjie (Fengjie Passenger Port) to Baidicheng; the river trip is the recommended approach. Fengjie itself is accessible by long-distance buses from Chongqing city (several hours) or by car along the G50/G42 expressways.
Tips for Visiting Baidicheng #
- Approach Baidicheng by riverboat from Fengjie for the cinematic arrival that Chinese poets wrote about; private and public ferries run from Fengjie pier.
- Look for the Song and Ming dynasty inscriptions carved into rock slabs; many guidebooks miss their tiny calligraphic flourishes.
- If visiting after reservoir impoundment, expect the site to be partially submerged in summer; spring and autumn give the clearest access.
