Badshahi Mosque
Mosque 17th-century Mughal mosque and Lahore architectural landmark
Facing the Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque (1673) is a Mughal-era complex of red sandstone and marble with a vast courtyard; visitors come for architecture, Mughal calligraphy and courtyard views.
The Badshahi Mosque is a large Mughal‑era mosque in Lahore, Punjab, constructed in the late 17th century under Emperor Aurangzeb. It is one of Lahore’s most important historical landmarks and occupies a prominent site near Lahore Fort.
The complex features a large paved courtyard in front of a substantial prayer hall, extensive exterior façades in red sandstone with decorative inlay, and four corner minarets. The mosque is notable for its scale and formal Mughal architectural elements.
Built during Aurangzeb’s reign in the 1670s, the mosque served as the imperial congregational mosque for the city. During colonial periods it experienced alternate uses and later conservation; it remains an active place of worship and a major heritage site.
The mosque stands in the heart of Lahore’s Walled City, adjacent to the Lahore Fort and within the historic core of the provincial capital.
- Visiting times: Non‑Muslim visitors are usually admitted outside scheduled prayer times; avoid Friday midday when the mosque fills for Jumuah services.
What to See #
- Main prayer hall: The main prayer hall is an enclosed marble structure used for congregational prayer and decorated with carved and inlaid stonework.
- Courtyard and forecourt: The broad paved courtyard sits before the prayer hall and is used for overflow congregations and public gatherings during major religious festivals.
- Minarets: Four corner minarets frame the complex and are visible from surrounding parts of Lahore's Walled City.

Tips for Visiting Badshahi Mosque #
- Visit in the late afternoon or early evening when the light enhances the red sandstone façade and the main prayer sessions (especially Friday noon) have finished - Friday congregational prayers are the busiest times.
- Enter from the mosque's main courtyard approach facing the Badshahi Mosque (adjacent to Lahore Fort) and combine your visit with a short walk around the fort complex for different viewpoints of the mosque.
- Be mindful of prayer times and local customs: the large courtyard is usually accessible to visitors outside prayer periods, while the inner prayer halls may be restricted to worshippers - plan your visit around non-prayer hours to avoid closures.
