Bač Fortress
Archaeological Site Medieval river fortress with extensive archaeological remains
Bač Fortress in Vojvodina is a medieval stronghold with lowland moats and reconstructed towers; visitors explore ruins, a small local museum and the surrounding flat Danube-basin countryside.
Bač Fortress is a medieval fortification in the town of Bač in Serbia’s Vojvodina province, historically part of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary frontier. It is one of the region’s principal medieval strongholds and remains a prominent historic ruin.
The site offers ramparts, fortified walls and the remains of towers and internal structures that illustrate medieval defensive architecture in the Pannonian plain. Visitors typically view the preserved curtain walls and central enclosure and use on-site interpretation to understand the fortress layout.
The fortress dates to the medieval period and served as a military and administrative center on the frontier between medieval states. It changed hands and roles over successive centuries during Ottoman-Hungarian conflicts and later periods, falling into disuse before conservation and restoration efforts.
