Bab Zuweila
Monument Medieval fortified gate and minareted towers in Cairo
A surviving medieval gate in Cairo’s old city, Bab Zuweila admits passage into historic districts; tourists climb its crenellated towers for city views and visit nearby markets and mosques.
Bab Zuweila is a medieval fortified gate and landmark in Cairo’s historic urban core, long identified with the Fatimid period of the city’s development. It is one of the best-preserved monumental gates of medieval Cairo and a prominent feature of the old city walls.
The gate retains its twin towers and defensive passage; visitors commonly climb the towers to gain panoramic views along Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street and across the surrounding medieval districts. Its massing and crenellations are a clear example of medieval urban fortification.
Constructed during the Fatimid era as part of Cairo’s defensive system, the gate has been adapted and repaired under successive rulers while retaining its core late 11th-century fabric. It has served both military and ceremonial roles over its history.
Located in historic Cairo within the Cairo Governorate, the gate stands on the route of Al-Muizz Street in the old city, near historic markets and the Khan el-Khalili area.
