Azuchi Castle
Castle 16th-century castle ruins near Lake Biwa
On the shores of Lake Biwa, the Azuchi Castle site commemorates Oda Nobunaga’s 16th‑century stronghold; visitors see reconstructed exhibits, archeological remains and learn Japan’s Sengoku-era history.
Azuchi Castle was a late 16th century Japanese castle built by the warlord Oda Nobunaga on the shores of Lake Biwa in what is now Shiga Prefecture. Constructed as both a military fortress and a stately residence, it was known for its tall central keep and ornate design.
The castle was destroyed in 1582 following political turmoil in the region, and only stone bases and archaeological remains survive on the original hilltop site. Excavations and on-site displays, plus a nearby museum, present artifacts and reconstructions that interpret the castle’s original layout and appearance.
The ruins lie near the modern town of Azuchi on the southern shore of Lake Biwa, and the location is accessible from regional transport links; the site is valued for its historical importance in Japan’s Sengoku period.
