Mii-dera Temple, also known as Onjo-ji, is a large Buddhist temple complex in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, associated with the Tendai tradition. It is one of the major temple sites in the Lake Biwa area and has multiple halls and temple buildings.

The complex includes multiple gates, main halls and sub-temples that visitors can walk between; it is a site for religious services, cultural heritage, and seasonal events. The temple precincts are extensive and commonly visited by both pilgrims and tourists.

Founded in the early medieval period as an important Tendai institution, the temple complex has undergone reconstructions and expansions across centuries, reflecting its religious and political roles in regional history.

Mii-dera sits on the southern shore of Lake Biwa near the city of Otsu in Shiga Prefecture, with easy road and rail connections to Kyoto and other nearby cities.

From Kyoto, take the JR Kosei Line to Hamaotsu or Sakamoto; Sakamoto Station is a short walk from the temple’s cable car (Sakamoto Cable). Driving from central Otsu takes about 15-20 minutes; parking is available near the cable car base.
