Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves a large Ancestral Puebloan great house and related structures near the town of Aztec in northwestern New Mexico. The site includes masonry roomblocks, plazas and a reconstructed Great Kiva used for ceremonial purposes.

Visitors can view the restored and excavated masonry, enter parts of the site on guided tours, and learn about local architectural techniques and community organization through interpretive displays. The monument illustrates a local expression of the broader Puebloan tradition.

Construction and occupation occurred primarily between about AD 1100 and AD 1300, after which the great house period ended and populations shifted across the region. Archaeological investigation and partial reconstruction in the 20th century shaped the site’s current appearance.

The monument lies adjacent to the modern town of Aztec in northwestern New Mexico and is accessed from regional roads; the setting is high desert with nearby agricultural land and riparian corridors.

Aztec Ruins National Monument is located in the town of Aztec on US‑Highway 550; turn off US‑550 into the site and park at the visitor area. The nearest city with full services is Farmington; the monument is normally visited by car-there is no regular public transit directly serving the site.

• Check the ranger-guided tour schedule before you go-Aztec Ruins offers guided visits of the reconstructed great kiva and those tours provide access and interpretation you won't get from the boardwalk alone.
• Plan for a short visit (typically under two hours) and start at the visitor center so you can see the on-site exhibits and maps that orient you to the excavation and preservation work.
• Be aware that the site is within the town of Aztec and often visited by school groups-arriving at opening makes the ruins and museum feel far quieter and more contemplative.
