Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves a large Ancestral Puebloan great house and related structures near the town of Aztec in northwestern New Mexico. The site includes masonry roomblocks, plazas and a reconstructed Great Kiva used for ceremonial purposes.
Visitors can view the restored and excavated masonry, enter parts of the site on guided tours, and learn about local architectural techniques and community organization through interpretive displays. The monument illustrates a local expression of the broader Puebloan tradition.
Construction and occupation occurred primarily between about AD 1100 and AD 1300, after which the great house period ended and populations shifted across the region. Archaeological investigation and partial reconstruction in the 20th century shaped the site’s current appearance.
The monument lies adjacent to the modern town of Aztec in northwestern New Mexico and is accessed from regional roads; the setting is high desert with nearby agricultural land and riparian corridors.
