Azekah (Tel Azekah) is an archaeological tell in the Judean foothills (the Shephelah) of Israel, identified with the biblical town of Azekah and noted for visible Iron Age fortifications and settlement remains. The site preserves multiple occupation layers dating to Bronze and Iron Age periods.
Excavations and surveys have exposed fortification walls, house plans and material culture that show the site’s role as a fortified town within the Kingdom of Judah. Azekah appears in ancient sources and the Hebrew Bible as a strategic settlement in the Shephelah.
The tell sits in the rolling hills of the Shephelah near the Beit Guvrin area and is within the modern Jerusalem District/central-southern region of Israel, roughly a few dozen kilometres west-southwest of Jerusalem.
