Auckland Domain
Park Historic city park housing Auckland Museum
Auckland Domain occupies a large public park just east of the CBD, surrounding the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Visitors come for museum exhibits, volcanic craters, walking paths and weekend markets.
Auckland Domain is a large public park immediately east of Auckland’s central business district, located on the slopes and rim of the volcanic crater Pukekawa. It is one of the city’s oldest and largest urban parks, covering roughly 75 hectares.
The park contains the prominent Auckland War Memorial Museum with extensive Māori, Pacific and natural history collections and a terraced lawn that provides city and harbour views. The Domain also houses the Wintergardens with two glasshouses and a fernery, formal gardens, a duck pond and a network of walking paths used for short walks and jogging.
Large open lawns and sports fields occupy much of the park and host community sports, concerts and occasional festivals; the museum lawn and paths are common starting points for city runs and guided tours. The Domain’s combination of museum, garden glasshouses and open parkland makes it a multi-use cultural and recreational area rather than a single-attraction site.
The Domain sits immediately east of central Auckland, bordered by the suburbs of Parnell and Grafton and roughly 1-2 kilometres from the waterfront and downtown. The park occupies the tuff ring and slopes of the Pukekawa volcanic feature, giving the site its elevated vantage points.
- Best viewpoint: Offers one of the best views over central Auckland and the Waitematā Harbour from the terraced lawn in front of the museum.
- Scale: Covers roughly 75 hectares and is the city's oldest public park, making it a major green space close to the central business district.
What to See #
- Auckland War Memorial Museum: Sits on the highest point of the Domain and contains large permanent collections of natural history, Pacific and Maori material; the museum building functions also as Auckland's principal war memorial and occupies a prominent terraced lawn.
- Wintergardens: Two Edwardian-style glasshouses plus a fernery and surrounding formal beds, together forming a public plant collection often used for photography and small events.
- Pukekawa / Domain parkland: The parkland around the volcanic cone known as Pukekawa includes formal lawns, walking paths, sports fields and naturalised areas following the crater and slopes.
