The Atatürk Cultural Center (Atatürk Kültür Merkezi, AKM) is a major performing arts complex located on Taksim Square in central Istanbul. It is Turkey’s principal state venue for opera, ballet and large-scale cultural performances.
The original AKM opened in 1969 as a national cultural institution. The building was closed, demolished and rebuilt in the 2010s; the new cultural centre was completed and returned to public use in the early 2020s.
The AKM is situated at Taksim Square, on the European side of Istanbul, immediately adjacent to the pedestrian Istiklal Avenue and close to Gezi Park.

How to Get to Atatürk Cultural Center #
The Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) sits at Taksim Square on İstiklal Caddesi in central Istanbul. Use the M2 metro to Taksim station or take the Kabataş-Taksim F1 funicular to Taksim - the building is immediately accessible from Taksim Square by a short walk.
Taksim is a major transit hub with many IETT buses and dolmuş routes serving the square, and it is also walkable from the lower end of İstiklal Caddesi.

- Check the AKM (Atatürk Cultural Center) official program and book tickets online in advance-popular opera, ballet and concert performances sell out quickly.
- Enter from Taksim Square and use the Taksim metro/tram for the most direct access; allow extra time for bag checks and security screening before performances.
- Choose matinee performances or weekday evenings to avoid the largest tourist crowds that gather around Taksim on weekend afternoons and nights.
