How to Get to Atacames
Atacames is a coastal town in Esmeraldas Province best reached via Esmeraldas airport or by road from Quito/other cities. Coastal buses and taxis run frequently from Esmeraldas city to Atacames.
Esmeraldas Airport (ESM): The nearest airport to Atacames; some domestic flights operate here. From Esmeraldas city, Atacames is reached by road - regular buses and taxis cover the ~30-45 km coastal route, typically taking around 30-60 minutes.
Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO - Quito): International flights arrive into Quito; from Quito you can travel by bus or a domestic flight to Esmeraldas and then continue by road to Atacames. Quito-Atacames overland travel is long (6-8+ hours by bus) but common among budget travellers.
Train: Ecuador’s passenger rail network does not serve Atacames; rail is not a practical option.
Bus: Buses are the usual way to reach Atacames from Esmeraldas and other coastal towns. Frequent costeño buses and shared taxis connect Esmeraldas city with Atacames in about 30-60 minutes; fares are low - typically a few US dollars for the local journey.
